Douglas F. LeRoy, Global Market Manager - Industrial Equipment, LORD Corporation: "Industrial Steer-by-Wire Systems Come of Age"
Topic Info:
Ten years ago, the application of TFDs for by-wire steering systems was in its infancy. However, during the past decade, a variety of OEMs have integrated these systems as a means to improve safety, reduce power consumption and enhance steering control in their industrial utility vehicles. For example, there has been expansion of battery-driven vehicles with AC motor technology, especially in the lift truck market. After all, by-wire systems provide designers with the freedom to explore revolutionary methods of everything from all-electronic braking and steering to a variety of safety measures and ergonomic improvements. The result is improved performance and reduced energy consumption through part count and complexity reduction, lower system cost, smaller component size and less weight.
This presentation will highlight the benefit of these by-wire systems as well as advances in the industry since the last update at the 2007 IUV conference. Topics covered will include a market and regulatory update, review of today's applications, greater use of GPS and auto-track function and how it plays into steer-by-wire and the move from hydraulics to electrohydraulics.
